Keris Palembang Lurus Ganjar Seiras Ulu Gading.
Keris Palembang Lurus Ganjar Seiras Ulu Gading – A
very good and fine example of a keris from the southern Sumatran region of
Palembang. Finely carved handle that needs added mentioning, is made of elephant
ivory and in the jawa demam form typical of the Palembang style. Top
sheath is also made of well selected kemuning woods with natural flashing
grains, with an angsena wooden bottom stem. A well repoussed gold alloy
ferrule or pendoko completes fittings.
Long and very sturdy straight blade with minimal base features or perabots,
has an overall shape or dapor called tilam upih. The base
cross piece or ganjar is made one with the blade and is called
ganjar seiras.; a rare form of ganjar.
Pamor patterns are condense, and are arranged in the mlumah technique of
the wos utah or scattered rice variations. At the base, a peak like
formation is seen and called ujung gunung. Also present are circumference
pamor lines called pamor wengkon. Certain pamor lines are brighter than
others and this suggest the use of the sought after pamor luwuk as one
part of the metal combination.
The pamor wos utah is said to enhance the owner’s material well being
while the pamor ujung gunung is said to enhance the owner’s status, and
the pamor wengkon is of the protective nature.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.
Length of blade: 15.4". Overall length: 18.7".
