MALAY ART GALLERY'S....House of  Keris

Keris Bahari Minang Kabau Perak Ulu Gading.

Keris Bahari Minang Kabau Perak Ulu Gading - A good and rare example of a keris from the Sumatran region of minang Kabau. Handle in the Jawa demam form is made of elephant ivory, with a repoussed silver pendoko or ferrule. Top sheath is made of well selected kemuning woods with the bottom fully encased with finely repoussed silver, having different motifs at the front and back.

Rather short blade is very sturdy with thick spine. It is straight and slim, and has an overall shape or dapor called bahari in Malay. The base features or perabots are also very similar to the executioner’s keris or keris penyalang, and it’s shorter cousin, the keris anak alang. All are said to be for status wear.

Pattern welded blade with pamor arranged in the miring technique, and of the adeg or standing variations. It is said to protect the owner from natural disasters.

Condition: Very good condition. Aside from minor hairline cracks at the base of hilt, rest is all in very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.

Length of blade: 12.3".   Overall length: 16.2".

Price:- US$630 excluding shipping.
