MALAY ART GALLERY'S....House of  Keris

Keris Minang Kabau Lurus Bahari Ulu Garham 809.

Keris Minang Kabau Lurus Bahari Ulu Garham 809 – A good and rare example of a keris from the Sumatran region of Minang Kabau. Handle in the Jawa demam form is made from the rare fossilized mammoth molar, or graham gajah. Top sheath is made of well selected kemuning woods with an angsena bottom stem. A well repoussed silver alloy ferrule or pendoko completes fittings.

Thick and very sturdy straight blade has well executed base features or perabots, and with its rather short and slim nature, it has an overall shape or dapor called bahari. Its strong similarities with the keris panjang or executioner's keris, has its status symbol, and coming from the region Minang Kabau that practices matriarchy system, strongly suggest the piece was made for a high ranking matriarch.

Pamor patterns are arranged in the miring technique of the adeg or standing variations which is said to protect the owner from natural mishaps.

Condition: Very good condition. Aside from minor crack and restoration at the sheath neck joints, rest is all in very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.

Length of blade: 9".   Overall length: 12.6".
