Keris Melayu Riau Luk 7 Bungkem 909.
Keris Melayu Riau Luk 7 Bungkem 909 – A very good
and rather rare example of a keris form the southern Sumatra or southern
Malaysian peninsular regions of Riau Lingga. Handle in the jawa demam
form as well as the top sheath in the typical Malay tebeng styles, are
made from very well selected kemuning woods with flashing grains. Bottom
stem is made from angsena woods with tiger’s stripe grains with an
elephant ivory bottom tip. A finely repoussed silver ferrule or pendoko
completes fittings.
Very sturdy blade with 7 waves or luks and well executed base features or
perabots and having angled sharp edges. The elephant trunk like feature
at the base of the blade is using the rare kembasng kacang bungkem
(Javanese) that curls in and touches the blade.
Pamor patterns are condense and are arranged in the mlumah technique of
the wos utah or scattered rice variations. All patterns are unplanned or
pamor tiban, and at the base an unplanned pamor tiban showing a
peak like formation is seen and is called pamor ujung gunung. Along the
sharp edges, circumferential pamor lines are seen and are called pamor
wengkon or tepian.
The pamor wos utah is said to enhance the owner’s material well being,
while the pamor ujung gunung is said to enhance the owner’s status and
the pamor wengkon is said to be of the protective nature.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.
Length of blade: 10.2". Overall length: 14".
