Keris Malela Luk 7 Kusiwo 909.
Keris Malela Luk 7 Kusiwo 909 – Another very good
and rare example of a keris from the northern Malaysian peninsular region of
Terengganu. Handle in the kerdas or pistol grip form, as well as the top
sheath in the rare kusiwo form, are made from well selected
kemuning woods with natural flashing grains. Bottom stem is made from well
selected bongo(?) woods with a finely repoussed pierced through silver
pendoko or ferrule completes fittings.
Thick and very sturdy blade with 7 meandering waves or luks, and thick
prominent spine and deep fullers flanking it. The base features or perabots
are very well executed and needs added mentioning. The overall shape or dapor
is referred to as malela in Malay.
Pamor patterns are not using contrasting nickel metals, but more of high carbon
iron or steel. This is the norm for the keris malela which stresses more
on the practical aspects with the fullers and thick spine, and thus not using
weaker nickel metals but stronger iron or steel.
Condition: Very good condition.
Age: Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th early 20th century.
Length of blade: 12.2". Overall length: 16".
