MALAY ART GALLERY'S....House of  Keris

Keris Jawa Lurus Rojo Gundolo 809.

Keris Jawa Lurus Rojo Gundolo 809 – A good and rather rare example of a keris from the central Javanese region of Surakarta. Fittings in the ladrangan Solo styles, with the top sheath or wrangka made of tayuman(?) woods and the handle of kemuning woods. Bottom stem is encased with an open plain brass cover or pendok blewah having a black velvet cloth central panel. A brass ferrule or mendak completes fittings.

Sturdy straight blade with a slightly bulging central rib, has plain base features or perabots, has an overall shape or dapor called mesem(?).

Pamor patterns are rather rare, and are arranged in the mlumah technique with an overall pattern of the kulit semangko or melon skin pamor. At the base, a more contrasting pamor pattern is seen and this is an unplanned pattern or pamor tiban that is called rojo gundolo.

The pamor kulit semangko is said to enhance the owner’s popularity, while the pamor rojo gundolo is highly sought after for it is said to ward off unwanted or bad unseen forces.

Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the middle 19th  century.

Length of blade: 13".   Overall length: 18.5".
