Keris Bugis Sulawesi Jalak Sumerlang Gandring

Keris Bugis Sulawesi Jalak Sumerlang Gandring – A fine example of a keris from the southern Sulawesi regions of Bugis. Handle in the kerdas form and the top sheath or sampir in the typical Bugis tebeng form, are made of hard and very well selected kemuning woods with natural flashing grains. Bottom stem is fully encased with finely repoussed silver, with a feligree ferrule or pendoko to complete the fittings.

Thick and very sturdy blade with prominent thick spine and deep fullers flanking. This blade has an overall shape or dapor called
jalak sumerlang gandringi n Javanese.

Pamor patterns are condense, and are arranged in the mlumah technique with an overall pattern called kulit semangko or melon’s skin. All patterns are unplanned and have a few unplanned pamor patterns called pamor tiban, which includes a peak like formation at the base called nunggak semi.
The pamor kulit semangko is said to enhance the owner’s popularity, while the pamor tiban are of the protective nature.

Condition: Very good condition. Aside from minor hairline cracks at the hilt,  rest is all in very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to late 19th century.
