Keris Bugis Sumbawa Luk 3 Jangkung, Ulu Sampir Gading 709.

Keris Bugis Sumbawa Luk 3 Jangkung, Ulu Sampir Gading 709 – A very good and rare example of a keris from the eastern Indonesian island of Sumbawa. With strong Bugis influences, the handle in the typical pistol grip or kerdas form is made from sea ivory, most probably the sea cow or dugong. Top sheath is made of elephant ivory and is encased with finely repoussed and thick silver stem cover. Base of hilt is encased with fine silver weavings with a well reposed silver pendoko or ferrule to complete fittings.

Thick and very sturdy blade with 3 waves or luks and double fullers and thick spine, with well executed base features or perabots that has an overall shape or dapor called jangkung mangkurat in Javanese.

Pamor patterns are arranged in the mlumah technique of the kulit semangko or melon’s skin variations which is said to enhance the owner’s popularity.

Condition: Very good condition.

Age:  Krises are traditionally made without any date stampings or engravings of the makers' name. Although a kris smith or "empu" has his own styles configured together with the dapor and especially the ganjar (cross piece). Obvious age wear and tear, usage, familiarity with forms, motifs and designs, origin and history, mediums and materials used are our guidelines in determining an approximate age. This particular piece, from our experience and knowledge, should go back to the late 19th century.

Length of blade: 14".   Overall length: 19.2".
