Japan's FAN MEETING 25 Nov 2006
Through report on Ken's fan meeting in Japan1
Umm….I like to go to Tsukiji….and also Tsukiji…how do you say it…market?
(asking the translator) ….Tsukiji Ichiba (ie. Tsukiji Market).
heavenSushi ….hehehe….Sushi Taberu (ie. eat sushi)
This time, I really haven’t got a chance to browse around, but it
doesn’t matter. I will spare some time to go when I am not that busy
tomorrow or the day after.:
Right…I just finished filming Chu Liu Xiang. Um….It took 4 whole months
to complete, 2 months in northwestern China at Xin Jiang. The whole
project was very exhausting. So I’m so happy when it finally finished.
It’s so relaxing. Then it follows with post filming production. After
that, it will be scheduled for next year. I believe it will be on around
March next year. You should be able to see it then.
This drama is very very special to me because it is my first time acting
in ancient costumes film. I learned so much from this work and also
…also… bear so much hardship because it is so easy to get hurt when
acting in martial actions. Fortunately, the filming completed safely and
smoothly
Honestly, I love eating
Right, perhaps traditionally, we Chinese pay more attention on eating.
My family has so many elders. They taught me how to eat the best as well
as the healthiest since I was very young. Actually when the publisher
first approached me about writing a recipe book, I personally was not
highly interested. I am not a professional chef. I don’t know how to
present the expertise on cookery to the others. Yet, I came across some
incidence and think it over and over. I hope this is not only a recipe
book but a book which shares my thoughts and believes from all these
working years with you. Then the recipe section makes it more practical.
I’m so glad you like it. This is very import to me. Thank you!
This Japanese version included something very special. That is some
photos I took in Xin Jiang. In fact, these are so difficult to get. I’m
so appreciated that the publisher granted me this opportunity to put my
work on this book. Moreover, I specially added one or two tips on every
dish for Japanese readers in this version. I hope they would be a useful
reference to you, so please take note on it.
Heee….heee….yes, we did have chances …. However, it is just not that
often in these two years. We are all extremely busy these two years.
Rather, we may not be able to gather. I hope…may be later on because our
company has talked about it. Perhaps, we, four of us will appear
together once again. I believe all four of us will have more chances to
get along. Well…I wish they will have the luck to enjoy my cooking..
Honestly, this is the first time.
The most important point in making lotus shoot is to cut it in very thin
slices. Then slightly rinse it in hot water. It should be picked up
shortly after 10 seconds and put it in cold water immediately in order
to make it crunchy.
make sauté tomato with scramble egg, usually I don’t like the tomato
skin. I will scald it with hot water and make it easy to peel off. After
that, when frying the egg, remember to make it semi-rare. Don’t put the
two in at the same time. They should be separate when cooking and being
mixed at last.^
Oh…I don’t have confidence this time ‘cause I know you will do it better
than me.
(Talking to a fan who’s cutting lotus shoot) This…this…I got to say,
that will cut your finger, be careful!(Talking to a fan who’s cutting
tomato) This one seems got the concept.
(Talking to a fan who’s cutting lotus shoot) This is good enough, I’m
afraid she will cut her hand….She cut this…this is just the right piece.

(Talking to a fan who’s cutting tomato) The tomato can be diced smaller.
Right…this way it will be easier to dissolve when cooking and become
tender. That’s ok…ok..(talking about the size of tomato)
From preparation to completion, it takes me about 15 minutes to finish
if I make them one right after one.
(Both sides started cooking)
OK…She’s ready….
(Fan making lotus shoot)
side is just ready. The other side is about there. Ok…let her try.
Please ask her to slightly fry the egg, don’t over-cook.
Then, I will teach her to make the “Liang Ban” (salad).
(The egg pan become so smoky) Watch out! It’s too hot, please tell her
to be careful, it’s too hot !! (Ken asked the translator to tell her but
it was too late. He rushed to pick up the pan and turn off the stove.
Then he put the pan back) Then add a bit more oil, actually it doesn’t
need that much oil, a little bit is enough. Now, put the egg in.
[Seasoning for “Liang Ban”(salad)] Oh! It’s done. It has some sesame
oil, soy sauce and vinegar. Then you can adjust the taste according to
your preferences.
Ok…it’s almost done. Now take it out first, right…. (The egg is done)
[Seasoning] This side…this is smashed ginger…this is smashed garlic…and
chili bits. Ok….you can put all of them in.
(When the egg is done, Ken clean the pan) Swipe the pan, use this
(towel) should be fine. That way, the two tastes (egg and tomato) won’t
mix. Put oil in, not too much…(fan is hesitate and putting it in drop by
drop) More…more….too little. Good, that’s about it. He then spread the
oil to cover the who pan.
(The lotus shoots are already put in the seasoning sauce) Now….this
side…to be hygienic, use chopsticks to mix them, I use my hand at home.
Then mix them well to get all the shoots marinade evenly. Afterwards,
put it in the fridge for a while. Well…it can be served now but it will
taste much better when chilled for a while.
The oil is ready. Put the tomato in and sauté it a bit. Watch
out!..Watch out! Be careful when put these in. You won’t get scald if
you put it from here. (Fan try to throw in the tomato but Ken teach her
to slide them in from the side.)

Stir fry the tomato until it gets soft and tender. Now, you can put the
egg in. Wait!…season it with some soy sauce first and sauté with the
tomato. That way it won’t take the salt from the egg. Ok..that’s fine!
Now put the egg in and stir fry a bit. Mix the two. It’s almost ready.
Turn off the stove. Sprinkle with some green onion. Since the onion is
only for decoration, it’s your choice to see how much you need. Slightly
spread them, now it’s ready to be served on a plate.

Ha~~ Two dishes are one!
Taste comments
(Liang Ban Lotus shoots) I can feel she delicately mixed them well.)`
(Sauté tomato with scramble egg) This taste good too! However, I made a
mistake. I forgot to ask her to put some salt in when biting the egg.
Otherwise, it will taste even better. Now it taste lighter.
Both of them did a good job. Thank you!
How do you feel about cookery classroom?!
It is very interesting. Hahah….I seldom teach others to do things. I
hope after they experienced it here today, it will draw their interest
on cooking. Then, they will keep it on. I also hope they will get to
understand and appreciate mother’s hard work.
Introduce some photos on the book
?
First of all, I’m a very boring person at home. I will look for some
interests and avoid getting bored.
About four years ago, I bought my first camera. I remembered that was
the time I just finished filming Meteor Garden I. Most of my photos are
on sceneries. I often need to go to lots of different places due to my
work. Whenever I have time, I will take out my camera to shot. I like
the sky very much. May be it is because I got the word “Tian” (sky) in
my name. Sometimes, I photograph animals but seldom take picture of men.
This time I worked in Xin Jiang, one of the most comfortable scenic
spot. In Ge Bi, average temperature is about 38 to 42 degree. Surface
humidex would be as high as 70 degree. Yet this was the most comfortable
filming site among the rest in this project. It’s cool. It’s clean and
no pollution at all. Then, I learned to ride horse at this place.
The most special point on this picture is at its bottom. Notice that
small spot, it’s actually a grave (right bottom corner). It seems to be
a clan’s graveyard. That is very historical. It doesn’t give you any
scary feelings at all. This is the place where I saw the galaxy for the
first time since I grown up. It deeply impressed me.

Ken send out Gifts
I went to shop some little presents yesterday. I like them very much and
hope those who get them will cherish them. Now I’m going to send one.
Let’s play a game.
I am looking for someone who was born in the same year of me. You need
to prove it. I am afraid there won’t be too many people. Let me take a
different question.
How about someone who is of the same horoscope?
How about someone who has the same AB blood type?
It seems impossible…let’ s see. Is there anyone who born on the same
month and day of me?
Please roll up her sleeve, one of it….it doesn’t matter which one.
Heee…heee…He put the dark silver bracelet on the lucky winner’s hand
Actually, I have prepared one more thing. Let me find it.
Right…it’s simple. Whose birthday is it today?
(2 birthday girls come up stage) Please put out your hands. (Ken put on
the rings for them personally) Thank you!
Ending speech
Minasen, konbawa (Ken spoke Japanese “Good evening everyone”)
Hahaha…. I really want to thank you all. I am so glad to be able to come
to Japan. I worked for 4 months. After 4 months of hard work, I could
spend such a happy day. This is my greatest honour. I sincerely thank
all of you for your support and caring. I hope my book will give you a
different impression. In fact, I want to let you know that life could be
simple and relax. Please cook more often as I believe you will gain more
from it. You certainly will get the same feeling as I do from cooking.
Thank you!!
Thanks! Have a nice evening. Please be careful and be cautious on
traffic. Safe landing on your way home! Bye-bye. See you all next time.
(Send out flying kisses, pat his chest and point to the fans.)
