Gye Nyame Ryu

The Gye Nyame Ryu Kids Class

Adult Class

Soke Adam Battle is a 10th degree Black Belt and the Chief Instructor. Soke Adam Battle traces his martial arts training to the legendary Dr. Moses Powell with whom he trained for over thirty years. He is a member of the Christian Martial Arts Hall of Fame, as well as the Action Black Belt Hall of Fame. Professor Raymond Weston has trained with Soke Battle for over twenty years. He is also a member of the Christian Martial Arts Hall of Fame a 8th degree black belt. In addition, Weston is a professor at Brooklyn College in the Department of Health and Nutritional Sciences. Soke and Professor have a bond of brotherhood that goes back several years. Men are not only trained physically, but spiritually and mentally. ICB is fortunate not only to have such great martial artists, but true brothers who continue to raise up martial artists committed to living their lives for God. The Gye-Nyame Ryu Dojo is a continuation of the legacy of legendary martial artists Dr. Moses Powell, founder of the Sanuces Ryu Jujitsu, and Florendo Vistacion (who was Dr. Powell’s main instructor) founder of the Vee-Jitsu Ryu. Gye-Nyame is both a word and a symbol from Ghana that can be translated as the "omnipotence of God” or "God the Only Sovereign and to him alone to be feared and honored.” Ryu is the Japanese word for "way of” or "technique” and Dojo (also Japanese) meaning school. Hence, ICB Martial Arts is not about our strength at all but the "way of God’s omnipotence.” It is God’s strength of character that we seek to exemplify as we discipline our mind and body in the joyful rigor of physical training. "Remember that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize. You also must run in such a way that you will win. All athletes practice strict self-control. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I am not like a boxer who misses his punches. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified,” said the Apostle Paul to the Corinthian church in 1 Corinthian 9:24-27 NLT
