Maine: Other Graphic Plates
Maine Conservation (loon) issue. This plate is the states first optional graphic plate. These were first introduced in Feb. 1994. Proceeds of this plate go to help the state support of enviromental protection organizations. After plate 99999 was reached the state rolled to a 1234A format. Currently plates seen in the "J" series.
Maine 2000 University issue. Starting in 1994 the state decided to have another optional issue. The proceeds from this plate go towards the University of Maine campuses. The dots represent the 7 campuses located throughout the state. Just over 23,000 of these plates have been issued since their introduction. This is the most popular plate for teenagers getting their first set of wheels.
Maine 2000 veteran issue. My book states 1992 as the introduction of this plate. These are optional plates for veterans. Only 2 sets of plates are allowed per family and are very uncommon to find in the junkyard or anywhere. Most people tend to transfer plates instead of dump them. Starting in 2001 decals would be introduced to cover over the red "V" on the left. Curently seen in the 38xxx series

(updated information)
Maine 2001 Firefighter issue. Starting in July 1999 when the state was changing to the chickadee plate, The state also introduced this Firefighter graphic plate to replace the lobster plates which were all embossed. These feature a maltese cross and a unique 5-digit serial. The first 2 or 3 numbers represent the department number (in this case Dept. 25 or 253). The last 3 or 2 digits represents the firefighter number (in this case 321 or 21). Therefore making this plate from Dept. 25 Firefighter #321 or Dept. 253 Firefighter # 21.
Maine 2001 Disabled Veteran issue. The first graphic examples of this plate were first introduced in 1988. The older design of the plate was white with a blue strip and stars on the left  and red bars on the right side. These plates were later redesigned in the 1990's to this current graphic.
Maine 2004 "Lobster" optional issue. These platesmade their debut on May 1, 2003. These feature the lobster sitting on a rock, next to an ocean scene. This also marks the first ever Maine plate to use the 123-ABC format. When I first saw these I did not like them very much but now that I've seen it and have it on my car, I guess I like it now! Current plates are into the "AAT" series

This is the secondplate to use the 123-ABC format. These plates began at 101-ACA making this the 11th plate. Pretty cool that I both new plates to start with 111!
