Maine 1974 issue. Again like previous new bases, the plates would be dated. This plate was intended to be used through 1980. This format would last till the end of the run in 1987. This is a kind of rough example. This was my grandparents plate number. Eventually when the Chickadee plate came out I reserved this number for may car.
Maine 1976 issue. As I said the '74' was dropped at the 488 series. The '74' was added again at 502 thru 510 series. After the 510 series the embossed 74 would be dropped for good, However "Maine" has been moved to the right of the bolthole unlike the one above where it was located under the bolthole.
Maine 1977 issue. Plate here is from the same series as above. Notice the heavy coat of paint on this plate. This time the '74' is gone for good
Maine 1978 issue. Like above, "Maine" is under the bolthole. However at plate 779-501 "Maine" was moved back to the right of the bolthole like the 1977 plate.
Maine 1978 issue. Somewhere in the late 500 to early 600 block of plates, "Maine" once again is moved back under the bolthole like previous issues.
Maine 1978 issue. As I said again, at the 779-501 series of plates "Maine" once again has been moved to the right of the bolthole again.
Maine 1979 issue. Well, since the prisoners or whoever could not decide where to position the word "Maine" they smartened up and decided to center it. The state name would finally stay put on the rest of the series of plates.
Maine 1975 issue. Starting in October 1975 staggered registration was introduced. Starting at the 488 series, the embossed '74' would be dropped from the plate. However it was realised that more '74' plates would be needed so the '74' was added again. (See Next)
