Maine 1953 issue. Starting in 1950 these new reflective plates would be introduced to replace previous '48 brass plates. These would also feature these new fancy dies, date validation tabs (used through 1967) and a new bead reflectorization process making Maine the longest running state to do so. These new fancy dies would be used only through the life of this plate through 1955. However these dies also appeared on some 1948 plates.
Maine: 1950-1955
Maine 1954 issue. Continuation of the same series. For 1954, an aluminium colored tab would be used making the the last uncolored tab for the life of the tab era. These new dies used on this base plate would only be used to produce about 400,000 plates and then discontinued.
Maine 1955 issue (2nd version) At the time of this issue the state was gearing up for the new 1956 dated bases to be issued. The very late run of this series of plates would feature these new dies that would be used on all plates after 1956. This would also be the standard Maine die set used through 1993. There are 2 different versions of this plate with this plate being the more common of the two. The second plate has a dark blue coated tab, '56 dies and round boltholes being the rarer of the two.
