Josiah * /Littlefield/ Lt
- Gender: Male
- Birth: ABT 1661, Wells, York County, Maine
- Death: 26 APR 1712, Perkins Cove, ME
Description: killed by Indians
- Note
Led a life beset by Indians. On their way from Boston to Wells, his
wife and Josiah Jr. were killed by Indians on 10 Aug 1707. He was
captured in Apr 1708 and spent two years in Canada, writing
letters
arranging for his release, and returned in Apr 1710.
He was killed by Indians in Apr 1712. Supposedly, he had drowned
12 of
them that afternoon and on his way home that night he got to his
door
and they shot him in the back. House was at Perkins Cove, ME
[today he would be considered a mass murderer]
Another source gives his birth as 1649, but this would make him
Mary's
child. Also his gravestone says that he was aged about 50, which
would put his birth around 1660 not 1650.

-(From the Littlefield Family Newsletter, Vol. 1, #1, p. 6): Captain
John Littlefield, as he was known, lived a very active and
industrious
life. He had a grant of land when his father did, in 1643. He
apparently purchased part of his
father's property as in Edmund's will (1661) we find: "I give
vnto my
sun John Littlefejld Tenn pounds, to bee payd out of ye fourty
pounds
which hee is to pay for his purchase att Ogunquett" which bequest
was
probably a ten pound reduction o
the debt John would owe to his father's estate. Captain John also
was
embroiled in a civil suit over his interest in the lands of the
Gorges
family in the Moody section of Wells. As litigation (and family
Squabbles) continued for many years there is much material
available
on this branch
of the family...Baptism: Parish Registers of Titchfield (from
NEHG
Register, Vol. 67, Oct 1913, p. 345)

LITTLEFIELD, GREAT . . . GRANDFATHER CAPTAIN JOHN (1624-1697) a Farmer
the fifth of ten children of Edmond and Agnes
(Austin) Littlefield was born on the first day of November 1624, at
Titchfield, England. He married Patience Wakefield about 1650, at
Wells, Maine.
John emigrated to New England with his mother, in May 1638, and
settled at Wells, where he was elected by the freeman to be their
constable. The
constable's duties included keeping the peace and arresting and
guarding criminals. Constables were guided by the concept that such a
force
depended on the consent and cooperation of the public, and the idea
that constables were to be civil and courteous to the people. For many
decades
constables were unpaid citizens who took turns at the job, which
became increasingly burdensome and unpopular. Wealthy citizens often
resorted to
paying deputies to assume their turns as constables. The Wealthy later
claimed the constables were unable to curb lawlessness and began to
demand
a more effective paid force to deal with criminals and to protect the
populace.
In the United states, the first full-time organized police departments
were formed in New York City in 1845 and shortly thereafter in Boston,
not only
in response to crime but also to control unrest, but a times they
became involved in local partisan politics. They were to remain aloof
of Partisan
politics and remained loyal to the law, rather than to elected public
officials, as the source of their authority and independence.
Police forces are organized as one of several departments within the
local government. The police are part of the criminal justice system,
which is the
means by which politicians deal with those they believe are criminals.
The system includes the prosecuting attorney's office, the courts,
probation
offices, and correction's agencies.
John was a Lieutenant, and Captain in the Wells company. He took the
oath of Alliance in 1680.
John died on the ninth day of February 1697, at Wells. Administration
of his estate was granted to his widow, on the seventh day of April
1697.

10 LITTLEFIELD GREAT . . . GRANDMOTHER DEBORAH (c1660-c1747) a

Maine. She married Samuel Webber in 1680, at Falmouth, Maine.
Deborah died between 1737 and 1747, at Falmouth.

His name appears on a paper for the purpose of government, called

Will 11 Dec, 1661; fam. compromise signed 17 Dec. by s. Francis
sr.,
his mo. and bros. Thomas and Francis jr.; inv. 24 Dec.
About the lawsuit of 1635/6, which named Edmund and Nicholas as
defendants:
The amount in the lawsuit seems to be 16 pounds. The lawsuit had
something to do with Edmund buying some wool and not paying for
it.
His brother, Nicholas, also named in the lawsuit did reply to the
effect that he didn't know anything about it and that Edmund did
the
buying.
The only further thing I know about the Isle of Wight Court Case
againsst Edmund
of Tichfield and Nicholas his brother is that Nicholas answered
17 Jan
1636 that
this brother had been in trade many years as a clothier buying
wool in
various
places and the defandant knew not whence the wool came, whether
from
the
complainant or other; that he bought wool of his brother qand di
not
inquire as
to the source; and he knows nothing beyond this, and prays for
damages unjustly
incurred in the suit.
The complaint of Stephen March of Newport, Isle of Wight (Hants)
Esq
against
Edmund Littlefield of Titchfield, clothier, Anne, his wife and
Nicholas
Littlefield, his brother sworn to 12 February, 11Charles I (Feb
1635/6) is
apparently on file at Court of Requests, Charles I, Bundle 77 ,
Part
4. This
suit was found by the late Col Charles Edward Banks
