Precolumbian Cliff Dwellings - Part 2


So now we're getting pretty much as far down into the Canyon as the trails will allow...
 


At this point, I was thinking, "Did we just come down here to stare at more of these from a distance?"
 

When all of the sudden you hit this corner, and see these bricks...
 

... and you have history right in front of you.
 

I have no idea what Keith's looking at here.
 

The Park Service doesn't want you going inside, for good reason.
 

Apparently, when these things were first "discovered," these were torn away and looted for goods, and as picnic shades.
 

Walls like these weren't torn away by nature over 900 years, but by the pre-archaeology "treasure hunters." The entirety of the dwellers was spent in the canyon; the children played on the paths outside. I don't think you can see it too well in these pictures, but the entrance and floor are raised above the level of the path so that the rain didn't get inside.
