Northern Taiwan:  Kuantu Temple
Kuantu Temple

This impressive temple sits on the Tamshui River in  Kuantu.   It was built to  honor the Goddess Matsu, Protector of Seafarers.   Since Taiwan is surrounded by water,  you can probably guess that she is one of the most popular Gods here in Taiwan.

The temple was originally built in the 17th century, and consists of a
long tunnel that passes through a mountain to the riverside.  At the end of the tunnel, a statue of Matsu sits high above the riverbank, looking over the river.  There are also a couple of walking paths that lead up to the top of a small mountain park, where there are good views of the area.
