East Coast:  Aohua Waterfall
Aohua Waterfall

This waterfall is on the East Coast between Hualien and Suau near the aboriginal village of Aohua.

Access to the waterfall is not so easy, since a Class B permit is required,  the
access road is pretty rough (4WD recommended), and there are few signs to guide you.

But, it is worth the trip, as this is one of the best waterfalls that I have seen so far in Taiwan.

There are two tiers to the waterfall.  The upper tier is best viewed from a  dirt path that heads uphill from about the half way point of the main path.   For the best view of the  lower tier, take the main path all the way to the end, and climb over the rocks to the pool at the base of the waterfall.

Besides being a very scenic place, this looks like a great place to come cool off on a hot summer day. (To be filed for a later date...)

Directions:   Head north on the Suhua Highway (Route 9) from Hualien.   Turn into Aohua Village at mile marker 161.   Obtain entrance pass at the police station, and continue on this same road.   Take the first left after the police station, and follow this construction road down along the riverbed for about ten minutes.    The road will head uphill after crossing the stream.   The trail head for the waterfall is on the left at the first hairpin curve on this road.
