Mao encouraged all artists of all abilities to submit works to the cause. Lead by Jiang Qing, Mao's wife, a panel of judges sought imagery best suited to illustrate the message. Soviet Realism, traditional Chinese pictures, i.e. Nianhua and Guohua were utilized by artists, or sunday painters such as soldiers, peasants and the average prol. Jiang Qing and her entourage vetted the submissions making corrections to any unacceptable images followed by touch-ups from professional artists before reproduction
Images depicted the Chinese masses in miniature, surrounding the ideal figure or form. The "Model Worker", "Model Peasant" or "Model Soldier" were always constructed as the dominant towering figure in the work. The "Model of Correctness" is represented in the above image of chairman Mao whose dominating presence offers abundance and Industrial strength.
