As you know the European Union is a very hotly debated topic in the Maltese Islands. In this site I will include several texts of interests relating to the history of the EU, its set-up, and also some points regarding the relationship with Malta.![]()
europe in the making
My first part regards the EU's history. Here you can find a brief history that will give you an idea of the basic steps that characterized the 50-year history of the Union. I am also including different speeches and other information relating to the formation of the ECSC (now the EU) back in 1952. These include the first arguments brought about by Immanuel Kant, Altiero Spinelli and Aristide Briand and also Churchill's important speech at the University of Zurich, and the Declaration which eventually lead to the start of negotiations between the first Six Members: the Schuman Declaration. europe today: a blend of institutions
The second part relates to the European Union today. It's setup, based on different levels such as Commission, Council and Parliament confuses many people. This section tries to sort it out with introductory details of these. It also discusses the role of the European Court of Justice, which acts as the Supreme Court of the Union. How is power divided between these three? The relationship is quite complex, but this section tries to ease it out. Enter here .
europe and malta: when did it all begin?
The third part deals with Malta's relationship with the Union. As I am sure that Maltese viewers of this
website have got enough of stories relating the present and future relationship with the Union, this section of the site reviews the Malta-EU relationship through the years, going back to the 1960s. Particular attention is given to the Association Agreement signed in 1970. Enter here .
europe and me
The last section is related to my works presented during my B.A. (Hons) European Studies course at the University of Malta, including assignments on European security, foreign policy of Member states, the setup of the Union, Competition Law and the Law of the Internal Market. Enter here .
