A Short Story
Penned By: Dave Brown
Uh-Oh.  Was this one of those trick questions?  Was there a right or wrong answer or was everything going to be not what she wanted to hear?  All I know about these situations is that honesty, even if it is painful, is easy to back up, because it is how you truly feel.  I always expect to be asked to back up my opinions, and I wanted to stay on the level with this girl, so I went with the truth.  "I asked you out because you've become an awesome friend, someone I can really relate to and have fun with.  I didn't want that to end after one quarter at school."
There it was.  I put it out there, and now all that was left was the reaction.
"I see." She said, nonchalantly as her unforgetable smile turned into a half-frown and a ponderous face.

"I see!" What the heck does that mean?!  That felt like a "thank you" right after an "I love you."  I was absolutely crushed.  I laid my heart on the line, and I got an "I see."  Well, I sure as heck didn't see.  I'm blind as a bat at this point.  Make that a bat with no sonar, because I have nothing left with her.  All thats left is to wait for her follow-up statement.
It never came.  At that moment her cell phone rang.  She excused herself and left the room to converse.  After she was out of sight, I slunk down in my chair and let out all my disappointment in one sigh.  I'd been here before.  I crossed the line.  I had asked too much of her, and she could not deliver.  My sigh must have shaken the walls, because everyone in the room shot me stares, which all turned to pity glances once they saw my posture and my situation became evident to all.
