A Short Story
Penned By: Dave Brown
I wanted to run like Carl Lewis out of that restaurant, but I had nowhere to go.  When she came back she said something about her friend Joy being stranded out in Long Beach and needing to get back.  I offered to pick up her friend, but she didn't want to trouble me.
As I drove up the long, winding road to her parents' house in the hills, I somehow managed some small talk.  I don't remember a word of it.  It is all so meaningless now.  I dropped her off in the driveway by her car, and then threw out an, "I'll talk to you later," but I knew I wouldn't.  She never wanted to be more than friends, but I needed more.
I needed more of what had kept me going for the last eleven weeks.
I needed more of what had made me appreciate the future.
I needed more of what seemed to be the last wonderful thing on earth.
       But it was gone.
That is the story of how I gained and lost Hope, the most beautiful thing in the world.
