|
The chattel house is the quintessential Barbadian home. As the term "chattel" implies, the wooden buildings were erected on plantation tenantry lands, and could be dismantled and moved at will. But as good fortune met the occupier and he moved from tenant to landowner, the house would take on additional creature comforts, such as a verandah or sash windows. This is a poetic tribute to a bygone era that defines the Barbadian work ethic. |
