Papers I have written
This section will have papers I have written. These papers will not be interesting to many people, if anyone. These are just here in case anyone actually has any interest in these topics. You can have them; just don't use them as your own work. Which I'm sure will never happen just because these papers will never be relevant to any courses you will take.
Spanish Inquisition
This paper deals with the Spanish Inquisition in Spain in the 1400's through the 1600's. My thesis was that the church had a vested financial interest in finding suspected heretics guilty. Basically, if a Catholic was found to be committing a heretical act they were thrown in jail and all their possessions were confiscated by the Inquisition and then sold for money. So by finding more heretics, the Church made more money. This was a paper for "history 295:Europe 1350-1750". My mark was 72/100... The prof told me I didn't know how to use a comma :P
Earnings Quality
This paper was written for "BSAD 424:Financial Accounting Theory". This deals with the financial statements of Big Rock Brewery Income Trust from western Canada. I had to assess whether or not the earnings were of good quality, and why they either were of good quality or why they were not.
Hostile Takover Paper
This paper was written for "BSAD 426: Advanced Financial Accounting". Despite the fact it's ten pages and 2880 words, it's only worth 10% of my mark. The paper describes my take on the chapters takeover, when Trilogy Inc took over Chapters in a hostile takeover and merged it with Indigo books Inc. It Reminded me of a war between two nations.
Internally generated goodwill
This paper was a make up assignment. Our BSAD 424: Finacial accounting theory class made very low marks on the mid-term. The mid-term was worth 25% of our final mark. There are 25 people in the class, 10 people failed the mid-term and the average mark was 55.9. In light of this the prof decided to have an assignment worth 15% of our final mark and make the mid-term worth 10%. I made an 84 on the mid-term and was upset that we had the assignment... but because everybody else did so bad I got heavily outvoted. The paper discusses why we do not recognize why internally generated goodwill on the balance sheet. I was actually impressed by the outcome... I'll have to see what the prof thinks though. If you don't know what goodwill is, let alone internally generated goodwill, this will confuse and bore you.
A person that I admire
This essay is for German class. I had to write a 150 word essay about a person I admire. I picked Andre Agassi. Not that I think he the most important person of all time, or that he's my hero, or that he is the most important person in my life. He is none of these. I just had to pick somebody to write about and he's my favorite tennis player, so I picked him. If you can't read German then you may not like this, because it's in German. I don't have translation because I haven't got around to it.
ERP Implementation
This paper was for INFO 245: Introduction to ERP. ERP stands for Enterprise Resource Systems. It's a fancy way of saying "computer system that helps business functions communicate with each other quicker". Basically it allows all the different functions of a business (ie Accounting, Marketing, Finance, etc) use a common database that has has the same information. This was my technology elective. I learned a lot in the course... it's just that this was the paper from hell. We had to find a company that implemented an ERP system and write a paper about it. The paper guidelines suggest a 20-25 page paper with 11pt arial font. I fell short by half a page which is cool with the prof. It's 6153 words long. I'm not overly impressed with the turnout of the paper. It's hard to find information on this stuff. Anyhow it's about the UK grocer Safeway and it's implementation of IBM SIS. I wanted to do Sobeys, but their implementation failed and they didn't want to speak to the media about it, so I settled for a grocery chain in the UK.
