Personality Yahiko has a lot of pride and doesn't like it when people call him Yahiko-chan. The "chan" added to his name is "like a childish way of saying his name". He feels can't protect his pride and honor without being strong. This belief leads him to Kamiya Kasshinryu from Kaoru. Yahiko has a personality of a "typical male," he belives that woman are weak an that he has to protect them. He has great sence of resposibility and sometimes does and says thigs beyond his age of ten.
Backroung History Yahiko was born when the new era started and his father supported the Bakufu side during the Duran. An even though Yahiko's father could have switched sides and survived, he choose to keep his pride and honor and fight to the death against the Ishinshishi. Yahiko's mother litteraly worked herself to death trying to raise Yahiko. After his mother died, he got picked up bye a gang called the Yakuza. The Yakuza forced Yahiko to picpocket in order to survive. When he picpockets Kenshin's wallet he is caught bye Kaoru but Kenshin released him. Later on, Yahiko decided that he wanted out of the gang, he was beatten up and then rescued by Kenshin. Yahiko tells Kenshin that he could of saved himself if only he was stronger. Thus, Kenshin enrolled Yahiko to be Kaoru's student.
Watsuki's View Rather than having an actualy model, Yahiko is more based on my own feelings when I was in junior high. When I was in junior high I actually joined the kendo club. At the same time I started casually playing kendo, I was involved in drawing manga. I was tired out everyday from swinging the shinai. But, I was terrible. Even though I was 183 cm tall, I was pathetically bad. My whole ninth grade year I only got to be one of the regulars on the team once. When someone dropped out they voted someone else to come in ahead of me. On top of that, I finished the league meet without a single victory. That's the reason why Myoujin Yahiko isn't a hero like Kenshin or Sanosuke, but a real-life person who shares those feelings of frustration and "wants to be strong." (If you read the 45 page short story "Vagabond" in the third book, you'll understand.) Lately he's been used as a comic character, but I think it's better to draw him as a boy my readers can feel will be a fine swordsman five or ten years from now. Like Kaoru, there was no real design. It was time for the big-eyed, messy-haired boy you always get in boys' comics."
