Personality Soujirou is someone who seems very cheerful, in fact he always smiles. Always. After many years of abuse he developed a smile. Soujirou would smile no matter what happens to him. He looks up to Shishio and is his right hand man.
Backround History Soujiro was born when a prostitute and a rice distributer met. The rice distributer, who already had a family, took Soujiro in to avoid any public humiliation. The family made Soujiro their slave and would verbally abuse him and beat. Soujiro, after many years of abuse finally figured out that if he didn't cry out and instead smiled when he wanted to scream out in pain they would become disinterested and stop beating him. This is how Soujiro became an incredible swordsman and one of the most powerful of the Juppon Gatana. When Shishio was running from the government, he hid in Soujiro's family's rice storage building. Soujirou found him and that is when Shishio saw how Soujirou was abused. He gave Soujirou a sword which Soujirou later used to slaughter his family. That is when Shishio began to see some potential in him and decided to keep him around. Soujirou became Shishio's student, he was able to suppress his emotions makes him a seemingly impossible enemy to defeat. Kenshin, like other warriors like him use the enemy's emotion to predict their movement. But Soujirou showed no emotion which prevented Kenshin from reading and predicting his attacks. Soujirou was defeated by Kenshin and when all the Juppon gatana was defeated, he became a wonderor.
Watsuki's View "As for Shishio, also Soujiro would not be due to appear so early in this space, but also for him I have received so many questions. Therefore I will try to tell something on him without compromising the history. The character of Soujiro, should understand it without too explanations, has been suggested me by that beautiful swordsman, Soushi Okita, that died very young. Leader of the first unit of the Shinsengumi, also his name, 'Soujiro Seta' derives from the name of infancy of Okita, 'Soujiro Okita'. Considering that I have put him the same name, some reader already thinks that Soujiro has some direct relationship with Okita, but it absolutely false. Okita is only the model of Seta. Soushi Okita is too much famous for I starting to tell his story now (who wants to know more of him just has to go to the bookstore and he will certainly find some books on him, so much known that in the first vote on the popularity of the characters of Kenshin, despite has appeared only few times, he has conquered the sixth position). I got inspired to Okita described by Mr. Ryotaro Shiba rather than to Okita of 'Burn Sword.' My Okita is in short that of the 'Shinsengumi Keppuuroku' who lost every feeling of pity for other men. The fans of the Shinsengumi are angry because I have created a 'bad' inspired to Okita, however is inspired to Okita of the 'stories', I could not do a positive character of it, but necessarily a tenacious enemy of Kenhsin. It is very more difficult to draw than I thought and so far I have succeeded in doing only him, let's say, for a quarter of the general image that I had made. I would like however to draw him better because he is an appreciated character. I was not graphically inspired by anyone. I have had to imagine Okita who, unlike the other samurai, had not trimmed the anterior part of the head and he made his hair grow. This way he has become as you see him now. I draw him with some female line to make the smile appear clearer."
