Tsuzuki Asato is the main character of Yami no Matsuei. He loves food, sweet things in general, and loves to drink as well. He'll sometimes do anything for food, though he is a terrible cook himself. He is an adorable character with a childlike demeanor. But there is a dark past behind his cheerful face (isn't there always?). When he was alive, he was persecuted for having those unnatural violet eyes, and went insane at the age of 18. He was placed in a hospital for eight years, during which he sometimes awoke to moments of lucidity. He tried to commit suicide several times, and finally succeed at the age of 26. During the 8 years of imprisonment in the hospital, he was given no food or water, and yet he lived. Muraki's grandfather, also a doctor, suspected that Tsuzuki was not entirely human. Tsuzuki desperately wanted to be human and to be loved by humans, not persecuted, and when he didn't receive that love, he went insane. After his death, he became a shinigami, mastered 12 shikigami, and became the sweet-toothed character that we know. He has worked as a shinigami for 70 years, yet no one wants him for a partner because he is known as the laziest one and the food-eating, extra space-taker of the Enma-Cho division. He's had many partners, none of which stayed with him (including Tatsumi), except Hisoka, his newest partner.

Kurosaki Hisoka is Tsuzuki's partner shinigami. He is also a main character. Hisoka is a reserved, aloof boy who closes himself off from others, but he's become slightly more open ever since he was partnered with Tsuzuki. Hisoka was born into a traditional family, where he was mistreated because of his supernatural powers. As a child, he was always locked into the basement whenever he showed the slightest bit of his psychic powers. As a result of that, he never trusted anyone, lived alone, and locked his own feelings away so that he won't be rejected by anyone else. He is able to synchronize with whoever he touches, which is to say that he can feel other people's emotions as well as their thoughts. He died of an incurable illness at the age of 16, but it turns out that he was actually killed by Muraki. When he was 13, he couldn't sleep one night and went out for a walk. He witnessed Muraki killing someone, and Muraki decided to make him one of his dolls instead of killing him right away. Muraki said that someone as beautiful as Hisoka didn't deserve to be butchered, so he raped Hisoka, put a curse on him that marked him his, and then stripped him of all memories of that night. Over the course of 3 years, the curse on Hisoka drained him of life, making it seem like an illness, and he finally died at the age of 16. After his death, he overheard that his case was strange because there was a possibility that he was killed, so he decided to become a shinigami, to find the one that killed him and take revenge. He found out it was Muraki who killed him and regained his memories of that night. Hisoka can often be cold, and tends to bully Tsuzuki a lot, but in his heart, he truly trusts and believes in Tsuzuki since Tsuzuki loved him unconditionally. He cannot imagine life without him (he actually said something like that in vol. 8). He is only able to summon one shikigami right now, since he hasn't had much experience, but he is on a quest to master the renegade shikigami Kurikara, who is a powerful dragon spirit.

Watari Yutaka is a cheerful, open, and friendly scientist/alchemist who, for some reason, does not have a partner. He probably doesn't need one anyway, since he's usually cooped up in his lab doing experiments and inventing potions that changes the drinker's sex or switches the minds of the drinkers. He once made a potion that turned both him and Tsuzuki into little kids. Watari is always testing his new inventions on his fellow shinigami and usually gets Tsuzuki to be a test subject by promising him food or sweets or liquor. Watari is fun loving and high-spirited. He and Tsuzuki gets along really well together. They're almost like best friends. Watari has a pet owl called 003, about the size of handbag. He also has other penguin like creatures as pets. The only time you ever see him sad or depressed is when he thinks his experiments failed.
