Code Name: Heero Yuy
Gundam: Wing, Wing Zero
Colony: L1

Heero is named after the dead martyr Heero Yuy who spoke for the freedom of the colonies years before the Heero we know was even born.  No one knows what Heero's real name is, but he was renamed Heero Yuy to symbolize his mission.
Heero was trained from young to be the Perfect Soldier.  No emotions, ignore pain, carry out his mission, things like that.  Even before he was taken in by Doctor J to train to be a pilot, he had been in the sabotage and destroy business (as a child) with a man commonly believed to be his father.  He is the perhaps the most important pilot of all the original five.  Heero's personality is one that matches the Perfect Soldier exactly, as he was raised to be, though through the progress of the series we see his compassionate side as well.  Heero is cold, stoic, doesn't talk much, and is likely to kill anyone who gets in his way (of his missions, that is).  The only two things that he did that went against his orders were not killing Relena (because she saw his face and he wasn't supposed to reveal himself) and not killing Duo (because Duo was captured by the enemies and Heero had orders to kill him before Duo could give anything away by torture).  These two acts show us the human side locked away behind the soldier.  Despite Heero's mechanical goings through life and a tendency to self-destruct at the first chance (though his death wish no where comes close to that of Trowa) is belied by his occasional rare acts of kindness, as if his real personality burst through the one of the Perfect killing machine.  Stangely enough, Heero always says, "Live according to your emotions." when he ignores his emotions almost all the time.  Heero is definitely the coldest and most ruthless of the five.  He is the symbolism of the Gundam, perfect unfeeling killing machines.
Heero was the first gundam pilot spotted by the enemy, so he was refered to as "Gundam 01".  He is therefore universally acknowledged as the first gundam pilot.

Code Name: Duo Maxwell
Gundam: Deathscythe, Deathscythe Hell Custom
Colony: L2

Duo Maxwell is the pilot of "Gundam 02" as refered to by his enemies.  Orphaned by the war, he was a street rat in a gang of orphan kids that roamed the streets of the colony and stole to keep themselves alive.  Taken in by the Maxwell Church, he was raised by Father Maxwell and Sister Helen (and some other nuns, I guess), but became an "orphan" again when the military destroyed the Church and killed everyone in it.  Though raised to be a Catholic, he never believed in God, claiming instead that he believed in Shinigami, the God of Death, because he'd only seen death.
Duo is perhaps the most cheerful pilot out of all five.  One could say that he was the happiest, with the saddest past.  Having come to terms with his lot early on in life, he understands that it is better to enjoy life than to mourn it.  When in battle, he is the self-proclaimed Shinigami, the God of Death, and destroys with a smile on his face, though he does understands that what he does is killing.
Duo's trademark is his thick long chesnut braid, that he refused to have cut off as a child at the Maxwell Church.  Duo is the name he gave himself before the Church took him in, supposedly in honor of a dead fellow street rat named Solo.  No one knows Duo Maxwell's real name, not even himself.
Duo and Heero were the first two pilots to encounter.  Quatre and Trowa soon had their own encounter, but not one so explosive as Duo and Heero's.  Heero was about to kill Relena when Duo stepped in, thinking Heero was the "bad guy".  Having just found Heero's gundam at the bottom of the sea, Duo proceeds to battle with Heero, who quickly reclaims his own gundam.  The two separates only when enemy mobile suits appear in the distance.  Through that encounter, and many others after that, Duo develops a little "obsession" with the Wing pilot, as Heero is nothing like Duo has ever encountered.  The polar opposite, one can say.  This causes shameless curiosity on Duo's part, trying to figure Heero out.. ^_^;  (i.e. Once Duo lay looking up at the moon and wondering what "that guy" was doing...)  Heero apparently doesn't harbor any bad feelings (after their first battle) towards Duo either, as he saves Duo's life later when it was more profitable and convient to kill him instead (perhaps it came to his mind that Duo had once saved his life at the expense of his own as well).
Duo is perhaps the most likable pilot of all, though that's just my personal opinion.  His quick laughter and easy jokes often breaches the tension of war, putting the ones around him at ease.  Sometimes, though, his curiosity borders on butting into people's business, especially in the case of Heero.
