Match Reports 05/06
6/2/06 Keighley Athletic 2 Hambleton 3 AET

The Athletic players must have woke up on Monday morning wondering just how they managed to lose this cracking County trophy cup-tie. Athletic dominated for long spells, hit the woodwork twice, missed numerous chances but still went into the last five minutes of extra-time leading 2-1 through Mark Johnson and Steve Kernan goals. Then the Hambleton centre-half picked up the ball from 30 yards and unleashed an unstoppable strike which looked like taking the game to a replay. It wasnt to be, Hambleton scored the winner with virtually the last kick of the game and the Keighley-side were absolutely shell-shocked.

8/1/06 Keighley Athletic 7 Marsh Utd 4

Athletic progressed to the last 16 of the County Trophy following an entertaining contest with Marsh Utd of Huddersfield.

Things started well for the home side as Rob Wall skilfully curled home the opener. Athletic defender Tom Whitwham was then sent off for a professional foul and in spite of Athletic appeals that the offence was outside the box, Marsh equalised from the resulting penalty. The 10-men of Athletic responded admirably as Mick Goodwin fed in his brother Paul to regain the lead and Goodwin notched his second moments later with a superb individual goal.

Marsh pulled one back early in the second-half but Jamie Caulfield restored the two-goal lead before the visitors rallied to bring things level at 4-4. Athletic could well have folded but late goals from the excellent Gareth Peace, Caulfield again and Steve Kernan sealed victory for the Keighley side.

18/9/05 Keighley Athletic 1 Keighley Utd 0

Athletic won their second successive game of the new season but were made to fight hard by United. Things may have been different if the United goalkeeper had been sent off for what looked like a blatant professional foul on Athletic striker Paul Goodwin: The referee thought differently and the keeper escaped with a booking.

Athletic did take the lead when Mark Johnson tapped home Steve Kernan's cross midway through the first half and had several chances to increase the lead. United did create chances of their own but the game really petered in the second h
alf.

11/9/05 Eastwood Tavern 0 Keighley Athlet
ic 3
Athletic began their defence of the title with a comfortable win over a spirited Tavern side: Athletic looked a little rusty in the first half and Antonio Familio had chances to give the home side the lead. At the other end Adam Burns, returning to the Athletic side this season, should have scored when he rose unchallenged to meet a Jamie Smith throw in.

In the second half Burns atoned for his earlier miss by meeting Steve Kernan's far post cross and cooly finishing. Kernan then added a second from the spot after Paul Goodwin was brought down and Burns completed the scoring with a sweet left footed strike.
