| 16/5/04 Keighley Athletic 2 Three Horses 4 The third match in as many weeks of the two sides. On a baking hot last day of the season, the Three horses took an early lead when Bob Morrisroe brought down the Horses striker on the edge of the box, the resulting free kick was put in the top corner. Athletic managed to level things before half time - Paul Goodwin raced onto a Revis Sharp pass and firing across the keeper into the far corner. In the second half Horses took control although Jamie Smith pulled back a late consolation goal with a clever quickly taken free kick. After the game Keighley Athletic were presented with the League trophy. 11/5/04 Royal 1 Keighley Athletic 2 A typical end of season game with lots of comedy, plenty of chances and several tired legs. Three points nonetheless through Jamie Caulfield and Paul Goodwin strikes: Both good goals too. 9/5/04 Keighley Athletic 5-1 Cavendish A tired looking Athletc wrapped up the league and cup double on Sunday with a comfortable victory over lowly Cavendish. Steve Kernan turned on style, banging in four to take his tally for the season to 53. Paul Goodwin stroked home the other; sparking wild celebrations in the town's Victoria Hotel! 7/5/04 (Jeff Hall Cup final) Keighley Athletic 2-2 Bingley Town (4-2 on penalties) A classic cup final ensued between two closely matched teams at Cougar Park on Friday night: Athletic started the brighter and found an early lead when Martin Ross swept home following a corner. Paul Goodwin then doubled the lead with a looping header in the second half before Bingley really came to life and put the Athletic defence under heavy pressure. Nelson pulled one back and substitute Reilly equalised. Extra time came and went with both sides looking completely drained from their efforts. It was Athletic though who showed the greater composure from the spot. Steve Kernan, Martin Ryan, Jamie Smith and Ross all converted after Barnes had missed first up for Bingley, the pressure was on Reilly and his penalty went high into the night sky and the cup was Athletic's. 2/5/04 Three Horses 2 Keighley Athletic 1 The two teams met for the second time in a matter of days and it was this time Horses who had the better of things. Athletic started the brighter and were ahead early after Alex Familio neatly finished off a smart move. Athletic then moved through the gears and missed several chances to double the advantage. In the second half Horses pressed without really threatening until with ten minutes to go the referee harshly adjudged Dave Ellis to have handled in the area. The penalty was duly slotted home and soon after Horses sealed the points with an excellent individual goal, thus inflicting Athletic's second league defeat of the season and putting their title celebrations on hold for another week. 27/4/04 (Jeff Hall Cup semi-final) Keighley Athletic 3 Three Horses 2. Athletic made a terrific start with a flowing move straight from the kick off that ended with Paul Goodwin sweeping the ball home. It would prove to be something of a false dawn however as almost immediately the Three Horses equalised following confusion in the Athletic defence over an inswinging corner. The key moment of the second half occured when the Three Horses keeper was sent off for his second bookable offence, this led to a penalty that Steve Kernan rifled into the bottom corner. The ten men then got themselves back into the game with a well struck equaliser but it was Kernan who wrapped up the game with a clever close range effort, his 49th of an illustrious season. Its off to Cougar Park for Athletic for the final on 7th May. 20/4/04 B.C.A 0 Keighley Athletic 8 Athletic moved into the top spot with a resounding victory over B.C.A on Tuesday night. B.C.A are are useful side and are not the sort of team who fall to many heavy defeats. Athletic however were on top form, particularly striker's Steve Kernan and Paul Goodwin who cracked home four and two respectively with Jamie Smith and Tom Whitwham providing the rest. 15/4/04 Fleece 2 Keighley Athletic 5 Athletic continued to home in on the title with a solid performance in Harden. On a difficult surface, Athletic's usual passing game was stifled and a more battling performance was called for: The Athletic midfield duly delivered and provided Paul Goodwin with the ammunition to crack home four excellent goals with Steve Kernan firing in the other- his 43rd of the season. 10/4/04 Silsden Town 1 Keighley Athletic 9 Athletic were much improved against a battling Silsden outfit and recorded a comprehensive victory. Silsden took an early lead but Athletic refused to panic and Steve Kernan(3), Tom Whitwham(2), Mick Goodwin, Jamie Caufield, Antonio Familio and Martin Ross strikes saw them winning comfortably. 6/4/04 Cavendish 1 Keighley Athletic 3 A lacklustre Athletic performance and spirited Cavendish one produced a close if occasionally scrappy game. Athletic never really got out of first gear and their finishing and workrate was pretty much abysmal. They took the lead however, early in the half when Jamie Smith blasted home form the edge of the box and a slick bit of passing. Cavendish then immediately equalised following a Nicholson howler but Atheltic soon regained the lead when Paul Goodwin struck. The second half was little better than the first but Steve Kernan did bag his 39th goal of the season to give Athletic a little breathing space. 28/3/04 Keighley Athletic 1 New Variety Club 1 The clash of the top two produced a very entertaining game which could have gone either way: Athletic started the stronger and went ahead in the early stages when Tom Whitwham nodded home after the Variety keeper had fumbled a Dave Ellis shot. Both sides went on to hit the woodwork in a dramatic end to the half. New Variety, with the wind at their backs, came out much stronger in the second half and Heath Maddocks in the Athletic goal was kept busy. His defences were finally breached with ten minutes to go when Liam Jeffries poked the ball home after a free kick has caused chaos in the Athletic area. So 1-1 and Athletic undoubtedly the happier with a point which leaves them four points behind Variety with four games in hand. 14/3/04 Keighley Athletic 3 Albert Hotel 2 The Albert Hotel provided a stiff test for Athletic who had a Dave Ellis hat-trick to thank for three precious points: The powerful midfielder's first was the pick of the bunch- a sweetly struck 25-yard drive into the top corner of the goal which left the Albert keeper with absolutely no chance. Billy Horton then equalised for Albert from the penalty spot following a Stewart Nicholson handball only for Ellis to bundle home his second to give a 2-1 half-time advantage. Albert then equalised again with a cracker of their own but up stepped that man Ellis to volley home the winner. Athletic would have stretched their lead if not for some excellent goalkeeping but finished the game looking nervous and only the crossbar prevented Nicholson from scoring a spectacular own goal and gifting Albert a point. |
