    Ode To Christmas Shopping

I rolled over in my bed and looked at the time
I, gasped, and jumped up, it was a quarter after nine
I dressed and grabbed my keys, cause errands I had a ton
And headed to my car, there was shopping to be done

I picked up the holiday ham, then headed toward the stores
To cash in on the bargains, from the sales galore
On my way to the mall, I got stuck in a traffic jam
When traffic started moving, my brakes I had to slam

Some joker cut me off, he almost hit my door
There went my Christmas ham, it tumbled to the floor
Finally, I got to the mall--but there wasn't any places
As I hunted in my car, for empty parking spaces

I almost gave up, but, at last I finally saw
A lady with some bags, coming out of the mall
'Yes'! This was my chance, I waited for her to leave
I waited as she put up her bags, and fumbled for her keys

My patience wearing thin, I started to honk and beep
What was taken so long? Had she fallen asleep?
Eventually, she started her car and drove out of the lot
And I hurriedly pulled into, that newly vacant spot

I locked up my car and headed for the door
I couldn't believe my eyes, as I walked into the department store
Sales 50% off or buy one get one free
And I started to imagine, all these gifts under my tree

I didn't know where to go first, untill I finally seen
The display window, which held--the last pair of low rise jeans
So I rushed into buy them, but it became a tug of war
As a lady grabbed one leg, and we pulled 'til they finally tore
I couldn't believe this, it was the last pair of jeans
All the tugging and pulling, caused them to split right down the seams

So I left that store and thought, I'll try my luck elsewhere
When I ended up in, Bath and Body Care
They had beautiful gift boxes, lotions and body spray
Bubble baths and shampoos, perfumed like a bouquet
What a great gift, I thought, so I picked up one or two
I bought one tin in silver, the other in satin blue

Happy to have some gifts, I headed for the toys
Madness consumed this store, filled with girls and boys
Dolls singing, bells ringing, train whistling noise
My head was spinning, but I still kept my poise
I walked up and down the aisles, and checked the video games
Almost everything was sold, so I bought a toy train

I still needed more, so I searched on all the shelves
Almost everything was gone, if only there were really Christmas elves
Then a glimmer caught my eye--there was the most perfect doll
When lil Annies mom came running, and snatched it off the wall
She shoved me out of the way, as if I wasn't there
So I had to settle for, the big overstuffed teddy bear

I waited in the checkout line, with twenty people or so
Only one register was open, no wonder it was going so slow
I waited in line with two toddlers, their father and mother
While the older girl kept picking on her little baby brother
    He cried...he whined..he hollered... I thought
I'd never get through this line, and get these presents bought

Then came my turn, the clerk asked, "Cash or charge"
"We are all out of boxes for teddy bears that large"
But they offered to throw in a big red velvet bow
And they tied it around, the teddy bears toe

With my bags in hand--I continued on my shopping spree
I bought a fishing pole for dad, and brother a pair of ski's
A watch for my husband, some earrings for my nieces
And for the entire kin, Old Navy performance fleeces

I shopped and shopped, I spent and bought-- everything in sight
By the time I was through, the day had turned to night
So I hurried home to wrap, and put them under the tree
After everything was done, I made some time for me
As I settled into the sofa, I thought next year I'll do this in
    November
But I make that promise every year, and end up last minute
    shopping in December.
