What Would Thanksgiving Be, Without Pumpkin Pie?

Thy fruit which ripend by summers beam
And sunshine gave --its orange-golden gleam
Thy gourd that was reaped, under autumn skies
Tis' met at Thanksgiving, with oooh's and sighs

Thy holiday that brings us all together
That draws us out in tangy weather
For the dessert---that excites the eyes
What would Thanksgiving be, without pumpkin pies

Thy turkey and stuffin, they are the most fair
But thy golden pumpkin, by far, -nothing compares
For thy wafting aroma, in which senses
    tantalize
Oh, what would Thanksgiving be--without pumpkin pies

And in our grace, we give thanks ---for thy fruit on the vine
That gave us the most delicious pies- to dine
And for that dessert, thou can hardly wait
To divulge into the slice-sitting on the plate

Thy bounty is plentiful and thy feast overflows
With turkey and yams and mash potatoes
But, yet thou has --thine eye on the prize
For what would Thanksgiving be, without pumpkin pies

You think about seconds--but hurry past the buffet
And head straight towards -the dessert tray
And though your stomach, may not be as big as your eyes
It's just not Thanksgiving without pumpkin pies

With thy dish in hand --you carefully spy
Passing over the cake, the pudding, and pie
Though the chocolate is tempting--you haven't to think twice
And cut yourself off a hearty slice
Tis' thy toasted-brown filling, that catches your eyes
For it would not be Thanksgiving, without pumpkin pies

The dessert that puts a smile in the old man's eyes
As grandma proudly boasts, "It took the blue ribbon prize~
at the county fair--it beat out the rest"
And her pie was crowned the county's best

And she pulls aside- one of the younger men's wives
Folds up her recipe-and winks her eyes
For grandmother knows best--because she is wise
That it would not be Thanksgiving, without pumpkin pies.
