Autumns Of My Youth

    Autumns Of My Youth

    Autumn fires warm me
tracing a path back to yesterday
    through a cast of leaves
    ablaze in flaming hues
    crackling beneath my feet

Back to the days of adolescence
    frolicking in fresh raked leaves
    scattered amidst a slumbering ground
    gathering them to sew life
    into the autumn man
    with his corn husk hair,
    and button eyes- smiling
    his October smile.

under a tangerine sun that peeked
    through the flaring foliage,
    flickering its kaleidoscope rays
    on a creek bed
where a caterpillar in his fall jacket
    crawled across the jagged edges

as birds sang the last song of summer
a reminder that the days were fleeting
As the scent of burning leaves
    lingered in the evening vapors.

When rustic apples shrouded the earth
like rubies that lie waiting --
    for natures creatures
    to scurry off with them
to store away for a winter's brunch.

    A crisp chill gives way
    to hibernation thoughts
that dance on an autumn breeze
    chasing me back
to the autumns of my youth.
