December 14, 2002.

As many of you know, we recently returned from a trip to Tennessee. We spent Thanksgiving with Kylan's family in Memphis. We flew down extremely early on November 28th and returned quite late on December 1. Overall, we had a great time. It was nice to visit with family again plus we saw more of the sights around Memphis.

We arrived on Thanksgiving morning and spent that entire day at Kylan's mom's house. It was a truly southern Thanksgiving, complete with a deep-fried turkey. (And Kylan was right...it wasn't greasy!) Kylan's sister and her husband were there as well, along with their daughter, Kirsten, who will be two in January. And I finally got to meet Kylan's cousin Derek, after having only spoken to him on the phone and via email. It was such a nice family gathering. Mom's friend Mr. Gill even came by later so we got to chat with him for a bit.

Friday was our tourist day. One of the things we had decided to do while in Memphis this time, was to take photos that corresponded with the lyrics in the song "Walking in Memphis" by Mark Cohn. It was quite a task, but we made a check list and managed to find all of the places mentioned in the song. (Check out the results HERE!) We went to Al Green's church first thing, then did a tour of Graceland (which we try to do everytime we are in Memphis), and then we drove down to Mississippi to find the Hollywood Cafe. It was a great little place with the absolute best burgers we ever tasted.

Late that afternoon we went to the Gibson Guitar Factory near Beale Street and toured the Rock & Soul Museum located there. It is a great place to visit for music lovers. Not quite as big but just as extensive as the Rock Hall in Cleveland. We saw the original sound board from Sun Records that Elvis was recorded on and even got to see a couple of BB King's "Lucille" guitars. The next stop was Beale Street itself, home of the blues. This time we were able to grab a table for dinner at BB King's Blues Club. We had the very southern appetizer of fried dill pickles...they were delicious! After dinner, we walked around for a bit and came across a blues singer performing outside one of the clubs. (They close the street off on the weekends.) We went into another club and got to see an Elvis impersonator! Lots of fun!

We spent the rest of our time in Tennessee with Kylan's family. It was nice to have a relaxing visit and not be running around the entire time. We took the time to drive around Henning (where Kylan's mom lives) and I videotaped some of the sights. I have to admit that it is really nice having a camcorder now so we can remember our trips with more than just a few photos.

We flew out of Memphis around 5pm on Dec. 1st and returned to snow covered Akron. It was nice to have been in the south for at least a few days where we didn't have to wear our jackets! We got our photos developed as soon as we could and there are a few posted in our online album. For those that we'll be seeing at Christmas, not to worry...we're bringing all the pics with us!

TTFN,
D.
