Nirvana

Lead Vocalist/Guitarist: Kurt Cobain
Bassist: Krist Novaselic
Drums: Dave Grohl
Record Labels: Sub-Pop, DGC
Biography: Nirvana started in 1989 by releasing Bleach, their first album under Sub-Pop records. The album was a smash hit and brought Nirvana into the mainstream. It was very grungey and heavy and seemed more like the band was experimenting with their sounds than anything else. Kurt wasn't a big fan of his music becoming very popular. They went on tour later that year. They changed record labels from Sub-Pop to DGC and worked very hard on their next album, Nevermind. It was released in 1991. This album brought forth a wave of fans which Kurt considered 'fake' since he thought they all just liked the one song, Smells like Teen Spirit. Under DGC in Kurt's lifetime, they relased Incesticide and Unplugged in New York in 1993 and 1994. But the highlight of that time frame was In Utero. Personally, that album has some of the coolest guitar riffs and vocals I have heard from Nirvana. Songs like Heart Shapped Box will become the staples of the genre in future years. The live incarnations of some of these on the 1996 album, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, are nothing compared the the In Utero originals. Grunge preety much left the scene with the death of Kurt Cobain but you can still see where Nirvana has left its marks on the music world today.
