Health Units

The Health class is a semester-long class that will have the students explore an array of health topics (tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, club drugs, heroin, inhalants, abstinence, human sexuality, HIV/AIDS, dating issues, C.P.R., sexual assault, eating disorders, and mental health). The students will gain the opportunity to develop social, decision-making, problem solving, and cooperation skills. As a result, the students will be able to obtain the proper tools with which to promote and maintain their own well-being at the highest level.

Sporting Class (9-12)

The students will participate in team/dual sports and tournaments. Students will vote to determine which sports will be played at the beginning of the semester. The following sports are available for this class, ultimate frisbee, soccer, football, hockey, lacrosse, wiffleball, pickleball, badminton, takraw, basketball, volleyball, softball, cricket, frisbee golf, european handball, stickball, underwater football (torpedo football), water polo, dodge-ball, and field hockey. Aquatics (10-12)

Aquatics Records & Charts

This course is designed for students to improve their swimming ability and physical fitness through aquatic activities. Areas of physical fitness focused on in the class include muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. Class activities include: Swimming distances up to 1,600 meters, sprints, skill development, and aquatic games. Prerequisite: Ability to swim. Equipment needed: Goggles, swimsuit, and towel.

Aerobics I & II (9-12)

Aerobics I: The students will be involved in low to mid-level aerobic activities. Activities include: Step aerobics, yoga, power walking, and pilates.
Aerobics II: Prerequisite Aerobics I: The students will be involved in mid to high-level aerobic workouts. Activities include: Kickboxing aerobics, step aerobics, abdominal workouts, circuit training, and running.

Walking (9-12)

The activities for this class include power walking indoors and outdoors. This class should help improve or maintain student's physical health.

Boys Varsity Soccer

Kent City had it first boy's varsity soccer team in 2004. The boys played 15 games and had a record of five wins and ten losses. The improvement in skill, development, and teamwork helped guide this young team to a successful season. Next year the soccer program will be under the guidelines of the MHSAA.

Teacher Bio

My name is Frank Oxford. I have been teaching Health and Physical Education at Kent City High School since 1997. This past year I began coaching the newly formed Boys Varsity Soccer team. I am originally from Long Island, New York. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Education from Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY and a Master of Arts in Health Promotion and Program Management from Central Michigan University. In addition, I am a certified CPR and Water Safety Instructor. My wife, Lori, and I have three children, Tatum, Clark and Selah. Besides spending time with my family, I enjoy mountain biking, swimming, hockey, soccer, and being an active member in the Lion's Club.
