About Us

CWAO was formed in 1977 ( under a name of the Coalition of Women's Art Organizaitons)

by a group of East Coast women in the arts who recognized the need for artists to become

involved in socio-political process.

Activities

CWAO held the first national women artists lobby day in 1987,

sending 200 delegates to Capitol Hill to talk with their congresspersons

on behalf of women in the arts.

CWAO co-sponsored the First International Festival of Women Artists

held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

CWAO began a campaign in 1985 to work for the passage of an artist/art dealer

consignment law in every state in the union.

CWAO is an Affiliate Society of CAA and sponsored numerous panels on the issues of art,

art history, art legislation, and art education at the CAA Annual conferences since 1977.

CWAO is an Affiliated Organization of SECAC and sponsored numerous panels on

the issues of art or art history at SECAC since 1985.

Membership

No fees are charged for the membership, but participation in the activities which lead toward the goals of the organization is highly desirable.

Many of our members are accomplished conference and public speakers, others are artists who like to organize exhibitions or other public events, such as performance art, web art or more traditional arts. Other members write books and articles for art/art history publications.
