Each year millions of dollars have been spent on home use medical devices that many people believe will restore them to good health and well being. Unfortunately, some devices sold for home use or non-medical use are frequently promoted as miracle cures, with misleading advertisement claims that are not scientifically proven. While the majority of these devices do not pose a direct hazard to the users, they can pose an indirect hazard if they cause a patient to delay seeking proper medical treatment. There are a number of questionable medical device/cures currently on the market, these include cosmetic lasers, pulsed electromagnetic field devices.

As part of the course requirements of KBEB3234 Perspectives in Healthcare Technology , the students are assigned to investigate the effectiveness and safety aspect of the home use medical devices.
