What is a Childminder?

A childminder is someone who looks after children in his/her own home.
The law requires a childminder to be registered with the local authority.
Registration is carried out on a yearly basis; the childminder has to prove he/she is a fit person to be in contact with children.
The premises are checked for hygiene and safety.
Police checks are carried out on the childminder and all persons over 16 living in the childminders house.
The Local Authority limits the number of children in the care of a childminder.
It is a requirement of registration to have Public Liability Insurance.
It is requirement to keep records of all children minded.

Why Choose a Childminder ?

Most people choose a childminder because their child will be looked after in a secure and stable home environment. It is possible for the child therefore to be cared for by the same person from birth, until they go to school and in some cases until the child can look after itself.
A childminder can be flexible and help in times of crisis.
