05.05.04 Appointment at Naval Hospital, Camp Lejuene
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The morning started out rough; I woke up with pretty bad morning sickness, so getting up early for the appointment was really a challenge. I made it to the hospital, and started to fill out the paperwork on my family health history, and whether or not I wanted testing done for Cystic Fibrosis and other genetic disorders. When my paperwork was complete, I was able to go see the doctor. The doctor I saw was very nice, and she explained to me what the risks were with having the baby at the Naval Hospital, verus a hospital out of town. The main contributing factor in this is my von Willebrand's Disease. The doctor made sure that I knew that she was not a Hemotologist,(a doctor that specializes in the disorders and diseases dealing with blood) but there is the chance that during my delivery,I could bleed to death.(Fact...I know...but this is comforting...HOW?!)  She also pointed out that there is the chance that the baby would be born with von Willebrand's Disease, and if that is the case, I would need to be where there is a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), for worst case scenerio. After discussing this with the doctor, I made the decision that even though its going to be rough, I want to be seen in Greenville, where the Eastern Carolina University is located. The doctor gave me the choice of going to the hospital in Wilmington, but she couldn't guarantee that they would have the facilities. My first 'real' prenatal appointment will be on 4 June 04 with  Dr Hadi. Hopefully, they will be able to shed some light on the situation and make me feel a little better about being pregnant and eventually giving birth with von Willebrand's Disease.
05.10.04  Cravings Already?!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So far, I have noticed that I am hungry a lot of the time...thirsty as well. Over the past week, I have been craving mangoes with 'fish sauce' and corn on the cob...and popsicles!  Nothing too outrageous yet. Just talking about food most times makes me hungry. Sleeping is a little better...but I am still tired most of the time. I have been waking up, on average, at about 0730-0830. I wake up a bit queasy, and then after I take my morning medications, I try to lay back down and get some rest till my stomach feels the need to function normally again.
05.13.04 First Ultrasound
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Got a call from the Naval Hospital yesterday to come in today for an ultrasound to get some 'good dates' on the baby. So, I got up, drank a ton of water, and went to this appointment. At approximately 0945, I got to see our baby for the first time. The baby is no bigger than a lima bean, and you could see its little heart just beating furiously! I have never seen something so amazing in my life! The baby's heart rate is at 123 bpm. (Average they tell me is at 100) I had them print a picture out for me...though you can't really see anything distinguishing. I am still in awe...and I guess part of me didn't believe that I was pregnant. I've been pretty giddy about it all morning.  My new due date is 7 Jan 05...putting me at 5 weeks and 6 days as of today. Every Friday will add another week to my time. (Week 6 of 40 starts tomorrow!)
05.25.04 They tell me this is 'Normal' for pregnancy...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I made an appointment at the Naval Hospital for some hip pain. I saw the Dr in the Family Practice Clinic, and the Dr told me that there is a possibility that I am getting arthritis in my lower back. I was also told that there was not really anything that they could do for it, being as I was pregnant. So, Cody and I came home, and essentially, we were dealing with it, till late last night/early this morning. Yesterday, I spent the day in bed, as my hip pain got progressively worse. I could hardly walk without extreme pain. I called the Tricare triage nurse, and she told me with the symptoms that I had, that I needed to head to the Emergency Room immediately. The Dr that examined me there determined that I don't have arthritis, but I do have bursitis. Apparently, things like this are normal for pregnant women, because your body starts to do 'strange things' when you are pregnant. So, for the next few days, at the least, I will be walking around with the aid of crutches, and taking it easy.
