Bring with you: a first aid kit, flares, twice the amount of water you think you will need, a hand pump, paddle float, plenty of food, sunblock, sunglasses, hat, flashlight, extra line, compass, a watch, and charts for the area. If you can possibly afford it, get a submersible VHF two-way radio. Don't wear any cotton anywhere--once wet, it will make you cold and keep you cold! Fleece, and a wetsuit or drysuit are best. Wear plenty of orange and yellow clothing and gear for optimum visibility. Easterly winds almost always signal stormy weather. Early morning is the best time to avoid large ocean waves. Just remember that there are few natural waves large enough to break up boat wakes then, so wakes will be very strong. Approach all wakes head-on. Commercial craft, such as lobster boats, always have the right of way! Always! If you find yourself near a boat hauling traps, put your paddle down and wait for the boat to leave the area. |
