Born in the village of Shouryuu, near the border between Konan and Kutou, Houjun Ri lived a normal life with his mother, father, older brother and younger sister.  At the age of 17, he became engaged to his childhood sweetheart, Kouran.  However, the day before the wedding, he discovered his best friend, Hikou, kissing his fiancee.  When Kouran told Houjun that she could not marry him, he lost control in a fit of rage.  Houjun confronted Hikou, and the two engaged in a terrible fight on the banks of the nearby river, in which one or the other must die.

During this battle, Hikou slipped on the bank and fell in.  Realizing he didn't want to lose his friend, Houjun tried to pull Hikou back up, however, a jagged log struck Houjun across the eye.  Blinded by pain and blood, Houjun let his friend go.  Not only did Houjun lose his eye and his best friend that day, but the flooded river swallowed up his village, killing his family and the woman he loved.

Houjun became a monk to appease the guilt raging in his soul, never removing the scar on his face so he would be reminded of how he killed those he loved.  When he turned 21, Taiitsukun came to him and began his training.  He fashined an enchanted mask to cover his face as the scar made so many people uncomfortable.  At the end of three years, he had managed to resolve some of his guilt and took upon himself his role as the Suzaku Shichisei, Chichiri.

Chichiri is excellent at making decisions, and is insightful in the advice he gives to others.  He is able to perceive subtle things without being outright told, and as such, can be very considerate and understanding to the people who surround him.  Chichiri is very loyal to and accepting of others, being non-judgemental, upfront, and honest.  He respects people and gains their repect in turn.  As the eldest of the Suzaku Shichiseishi, he is the one who makes the wise decisions and counsels the others on how to best deal with a situation.  He handles all things with a cool grace that often eases tensions and makes things run agreeabley.  Chichiri has no selfish desires, which inspires confidence in him, and makes him trustworthy.

Chichiri is a Buddhist monk.  His clothing is traditional attire for monks at that time period and the objects he uses are indicators that he is a Zen Buddhist.  The Kasa is traditionally used to direct a pilgrim's gaze on the path before them.  The Shakujo is topped with copper Gohei that create a jangling noise to scare off small creatures that may wander into his path.  The Kesa has small patches of contrasting color on the four corners, representing the four guardians who preside over the four directions...  The beads would traditionally number 108 and be used to count off prayers.

There is an explanation for the phrase "No Da" which he uses after everything he says.  One is that is't just proper grammer.  "No Da" is just a contraction of "No Desu", or "to be".  The other is that it is used to indicate an emphasis, or saying something that everyone already knows.  Sentences ending in "Da" explain why something happened, or information known to speaker and hearer.

Another alteration of language that Chichiri uses is the word "Oira", a form of "I".  That, apparently, is the rural form of "Ore", the masculine form of "I" used by the other characters.

Seki Tomokazu is the voice actor.  He, of course played Alexander Howell in Ayashi no Ceres as well as Kouji from  Fushigi Yuugi.  He is also known for Kamui from X and Van Fanel from Esclaflowne.
