Not
so long ago, fresh graduates in our country obtained good jobs even before they
stepped out their academic institution. But the situation is totally contrasting
now.
Now,
we could hardly see freshies securing a good job, which is relevant to the field
that the person has studied for. The main reason for this situation to occur is
due to our economic status. Our unemployment rate is still very high although
our country has passed the “recession” stage.
Firms
and companies out there rarely employ fresh graduates nowadays. It is because
these companies have to “cut cost” in every angle in order to survive.
Therefore they are not willing to waste their time, energy and money on training
these fresh graduates.
However
some of these fresh graduates seem to get a payable job as soon as they
graduate. These are the “graduates with training”. Graduates with training
are graduates who have undergone three to six months internship with companies
via their college or university.
The
Higher Institution of Education such as private colleges and universities does
this internship arrangement for its’ students with the relevant firms or
companies. These undergraduates usually do their internship during their final
year. Although most of the public universities and some of the private colleges
is providing their students the practical training for some of the courses but
the majority of the higher education institutions are not practising it.
The
question here is why some of the colleges and universities are still hesitating
to impose a compulsory internship programme for all the courses to its’
students. Is it because these colleges or universities want to make a quick
profit or is it because they fail to realise the importance of this practical?
Whatever it is, all the higher institution of education in Malaysia must realise the importance of this internship. Students must be assigned to relevant companies to undergo a compulsory training. The Ministry of Education must ensure that every institution provides a compulsory internship training for its students.
