Racism in Job Recruitment

Vigneswaran Kannan

It is sad to notice that “job advertisements are becoming racial”. It is very true that a critical racial segregation is occurring in the aspect of job recruitment.

It is certainly agreeable if a firm advertises certain jobs on racial aspect if a certain language is needed in that particular job.

For instance, an Indian firm advertises for a telephone operator job only for Indians who can speak Tamil in order to communicate with its customers from India who are only familiar with Tamil. This is something which is not wrong because the firm cannot hire someone who is a Chinese or a Malay to do the job.

The issue here is that most of the racial-oriented jobs advertised by firms are seeking for graduates or professionals in the field like Engineering, Information Technology, Banking, Science and the list goes on and on.

Why are these firms so racial oriented? Does the engineers or IT professional need to converse with their machines or tools?

This situation shows that certain races are only interested to employ their own race. I cannot believe this racial dilemma in employment is taking place in Malaysia. I do not know since when these firms started to practise such racial segregation.

This may even lead to other undesirable problems such as racial terrorism if this racial favouritism in job engagement goes on.

It is because when a particular race is practising racial favouritism in their firm where other races do not get the chance to get into the position although they are well qualified for that job, the end result will be the hatred against the another race. This might lead to frustration and frustrated people are the ones who cause all the crimes, social and racial problems in our country.

Frustration is even the root cause for all the emergence of dangerous terrorists groups in the world.

Malaysia is a multi-racial country where everyone is known as Malaysians and we speak one national language, Bahasa Malaysia. This type of racial segregation should not be occurring in our country.

I kindly request all the firms in our country not to practise racial segregation in job recruitment. The government should play their role by looking into this matter to avoid racial dilemma, in order to attain a better national integration and unity.
