I have lived in Auckland since January, 1993. I moved from Sydney, Australia. Auckland is best described as a "little big city", as in some ways its like any other big city around the world, yet in reality, we are pretty (geographically) isolated down here, our closest neighbour being Australia, about 2,500 km away. Auckland is New Zealands biggest city with over 1 million inhabitants, but Wellington is the Capital. Personally, I think Auckland is way more important anyway... Wellingtonians know it too. The rest of New Zealand tends to hate Auckland and its people... We are known as "JAFAs" (Just Another F**king Aucklander). Wellington, which tends to be continually pounded by heavy winds has coined the satement: "Its windy in Wellington because Auckland sux". We don't care because quite frankly we are much better than the lot of them! |
