PAUL J. KAUTZKY
A Gentle Man by Alice (Kautzky) Snater

Paul Kautzky age 5 months
Paul J. Kautzky, Jennie and Edward Kautzkys third child was born January 15, 1908 on the homestead south of Perry, Iowa.  Paul spent his growing up years on this farm enjoying life, attending school at Washington Township Consolidated School and graduating in 1926.

Paul and Nona Wedding Day February 4 1931
February 4, 1931 Paul married Nona May Crellin, whose family lived a half mile west of the Kautzky home.  Paul and Nona set up their home just a half-mile south of where he grew up and he spent the rest of his life there farming 240 acres and raising his family.  Three children were born to this union: Robert Paul, Alice Elizabeth and Daniel Edward.

During the years of tilling the land and raising oats, corn, beans and alfalfa Paul also raised cattle and hogs.  At one time he bought 40 head of Hereford cows and calves, a huge Hereford bull and raised cattle.  Paul really enjoyed looking out at the pasture or cornfield surveying his herd.  Paul farmed with a team of horses early on, but one horse was eventually replaced by a mule, called Joe.  That animal caused more laughs and anger for a lot of years.  Harvesting the crops was a community/family affair involving all the family and neighbors baling hay, threshing oats, whatever needed to be done.  The wives joined in by fixing the huge meal at noon and supplying lemonade and beer for the breaks.

Paul loved old time music and he and Nona followed a number of bands around Iowa dancing the night away.  When Paul couldnt dance anymore he collected records and tapes of his favorite bands and spent hours listening to the music.  He inherited his mothers familys Arthritis in the hips, which later led to both hips being replaced

Fishing in Northern Minnesota became an especially favorite vacation and Paul made several trips to Leech Lake with Fr. Gaul, besides the trips with family and friends to Lake Edward at Brainard.  Trap shooting was another favorite past time Paul enjoyed and both his sons became interested in it along with him.

Paul always had time for his children and one vivid memory that remains is right after supper hed play baseball until dark every night all summer with all three of us.  Then hed have to do his chores and milk the cows, which made a really long day.

Paul involved himself in his local parish, his community and his family for the 83 years of his life.  Nona passed away March 7, 1967 very suddenly as did Paul on April 25, 1991.  Today, Pauls farm is farmed by a nephew, Greg. A grandson, Wayne, lives in his home.  We are all better because Paul Kautzky touched our lives in one way or another.
