Welcome to 8th
Grade Math. This class is a foundation for all higher education: not
only math and science, but also critical thinking and communicating
ideas. For many, it will be hard work. With effort, participation and
practice, you will do fine. I look forward to getting to know you all,
and to a great year!
Organization
Organization of
thoughts, tools and work is essential for learning. We will use routine
to reinforce organization. I expect all students to practice being
organized for success.
Supplies
-
Sturdy 3-ring binder
with 4 tabs (homework, journal/worksheets, notes/handouts, quizzes/tests) and
pouch for pencils and calculator.
-
Pencils, erasers, pens
(work in pencil, correct in pen).
-
Calculator (TI-34 or
equivalent).
-
When needed (at home):
Plenty of lined and graph paper.
Start of Class
Start each
class ready to learn, with your math notebook and homework (your
textbook can stay at home). Take your
seat promptly, copy the homework assignment from the board, and complete
the problem-of-the-day. Your desktop should contain your math materials
only.
During Class
We will, of
course, abide by school-wide behavior guidelines. General standards
include:
-
Pay attention in class,
and listen when others are talking.
-
Respect the ideas,
space and property of others. No “put-downs” or rudeness.
-
Raise your hand when
asking or answering a question. Do not blurt out!
-
No gum, food or candy
– except special occasions.
Assessment and Grading
Math is a
sequential subject. Do not wait until the night before to study
for a quiz or test. Daily homework, participation, and review of notes
and text will keep you prepared.
-
Term grades are
determined by averaging tests and quizzes, homework, math journal
entries, projects, class participation, and preparedness.
-
Test/quiz grades are
based on answers and methodical problem solving.
-
Homework grades are
based on completeness, organization and effort.
-
Parent signatures are
required for any test where your grade is below 70%.
Absences from Class
If you miss
class, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed.
Your assignments are due the day you return. Check with classmates or
with me, outside of class. If
you miss a quiz or test, it is up to you to schedule a makeup
with me. A parents’ note ahead of a planned absence is helpful, but
does not excuse you from work.
Homework Club and Extra Help
Visit my
Homework Club after school. It’s a great way to get the work done
early, while the concepts are fresh, or if you have any confusion. I am
also available before and after school most days for extra help.
Homework
You should
expect Math homework – practice based on that day’s lesson – every
night. Homework is due at the beginning of class and is graded on
completeness, organization and effort. Old homework cannot be made up.
-
Read the day’s
section in the text. Yes, we covered it in class, but reinforce it.
-
Do all homework
in pencil (since we all make mistakes).
-
Label each assignment
like the example below.
-
Clearly number each
problem, restate it, show all work and clearly mark your answer.
-
After completing
homework, check odd-numbered problems yourself using answers located
in the back of the text. Even-numbered problems will be corrected in
class.

Communicating
with me
I
encourage parents to use email
to contact me, and to bookmark my website (geocities.com/katz01945).
