Balut (Duck's Egg)
    Balut’s music and lyrics by Jerry Brandy. Katy de la Cruz first performed it in 1930s and Pilita Corrales in 1974 and the New Minstrels in 1975 recorded it. This was arranged by Ryan Cayabyab for the musical Katy in 1988.
    Although the song supposedly was all about balut or fertilized duck egg, it’s message is kinda weird. In the song, a balut vendor calls out at night, selling the eggs and telling that it would restore your health from lovemaking.

    The melody is playful, with jazzy beat highlighted by the instrumentation. The song has a simple A-B-A pattern and it was in the Philippine popular music in the era of the kundiman before WWII. Most of the popularity was due to the way Katy de la Cruz used to sing it, with her raspy voice and eyes moving along with the naughtiness of the song.
