Heartstrings- Published in Aquilae Stilus 2000

Chords and melodies
trip-tumble-tapping marbles
sound out bittersweet and crashing
into each other with the white rage

Of piano keys ground to dust
(remember him if you must)

Infant lullaby dream
sticky sugar silver sighs
"Happily ever after, my Prince and I
With the gown and guests and valentines

and the man in black and the organ song
(he backpedaled when she looked too long.)

Brass cords shimmer
Tangled tight in heartstrings
Aching and stretching they silence the sound
and worthless like the piano keys
hammered to shake the saltwater free
Swallowing music and noise.

Tears and promise paid the price
(I used to love him once or twice.)

*It's better out loud...*
