The broom is a magickal tool that can be used for magick, ritual and decoration. It is used to sweep and area clean of negative energy before a working, ritual of spell. After a handfasting(marriage) ceremony the couple will sometimes jump over a broom as a symbol of their union. Placed at the front and back doors of a home they will also bring protection. Brooms are also laid at the gateway to a coven circle, used to send messages to friends through astral travel and can be set outside to make friends with the local fairy folk.
The traditional way to make a broom is with an ash staff, birch twigs and willow bindings. This is because of the attributes of those woods. The ash brings protection, the birch purifies and willow is sacred to the Goddess. The broom does not need to be made from these woods however. If they are hard to obtain then any wood can be used in thier place.
The broom is associated with water and is therefore good for use in love spells and psychic workings. The broom is also sacred to both the God and Goddess. |
