As you've learned, Hermes was the Greek god of merchants. Hence, in basically every town or city in Greece, there is a street called "Hermou" where all the shops are. In Mytilene, this was it. Shops were open from about eight in the morning until two or three in the afternoon, then closed for a siesta. Some reopened from 5-8. This is a very busy thoroughfare, which is closed to cars during peak hours. We loved it once we got used to it.

Lesvos, the island we lived on (Mytilene is the capitol) is a military island. Lots of army people live here, and do their service. Every Sunday night, they parade into town, playing the Greek National Anthem (of which there are like 400-some verses.. crazy, but I don't think they play the whole thing) and change the flag that hangs in the city. It seriously freaked us out the first time we saw it, but then it was cool.

I suppose you could technically say this picture is from "Educational Field Trip #4" but I chose not to. We went to two museums in Mytilene, one for Teriad, who was a Greek dude who collected art and published an art magazine I think.. then we went to the museum for Theophilos, a Greek painter who was pretty much crazy. |

After the museums, we walked off for ice cream, yum.

Along the way, Dana and I tried to teach Maria how to punch, but it was pretty much futile.

Then we stopped by a pottery shop, where we got a tour and Nick showed us how he spins pots and things on the wheel. We of course decided to spend a shitload of money buying his pottery, and he gave us a huge discount. It was marvelous. I love that stuff, its so much fun!! I have Nick's pottery all over, two mugs, two vases, a mirror, a plate. I got grandma a cup and plate, we got Genny a mirror, I got Ry a cool jug, and Amy got a cute little jewelry kinda thing. Yay for fun pottery!! Nick was the coolest, and his sister Anna painted it. Yahoo.
